Ear InfectionsAn earache occurs as a result of inflammation, swelling or infection of the middle ear. Earache usually takes one of three forms:
• Acute otitis media which usually presents with earache or irritability, red, inflamed, bulging ear drum and a temperature,
• Chronic inflammation (serous otitis media) which usually presents with painless hearing loss, dull immobile ear drum,
• Infection or inflammation of the external ear canal usually presenting as itching, discharge or burning pain.
Acute otitis media usually presents after an upper respiratory infection.
Ear infections are the most common diagnosis in children. The most common treatment is antibiotics and pain relief. However each course of antibiotic treatment can take up to 6 months to re-balance the gut flora.
Any client who presents with an ear infection, particularly of sudden onset should see their GP, however a nutritional therapist can help to boost immunity and to repair any damage from antibiotic treatment.
